The Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) Process
A Simple Explanation of the RTM (or Resin Injection) Process and Benefits
Resin Transfer Molding, sometimes referred to as Resin Injection Molding, is a low pressure, "closed mold" process. This simply means that RTM parts are made by injecting liquid resin and catalyst into a closed mold cavity containing dry fiber reinforcements. Some of the benefits include: fast cycle times, parts that can be produced to very close tolerances, parts that are smooth on both sides, and production rate capacity up to 10,000+ parts per year.
Other RTM benefits include:
- Durable and dimensionally stable parts
- Uniform thickness of parts produced
- Molded in components as inserts and fasteners in positive positions
- Molded in core media
- Parts will not corrode or rust
- Parts are impact resistant
- Parts can be chemical resistant
- Parts can be fire retardant

- Custom tooling assures the accuracy of your design and parts
- Minimal release of airborne emissions during production
The dry fiber reinforcements can be glass, carbon, or other specialized materials to meet your needs. These fiber materials can also be custom configured (preformed) to enhance the production speed and reduce labor costs. The liquid resin is also available with many options, including: polyester, epoxy, vinyl ester, and others. Pigments and fillers can also be added to suit your part requirements.
